Stress is a response to daily pressures or a threatening situation and can negatively affect your health. Symptoms can include:
- Headaches
- High blood pressure
- Heart palpitations
- Difficulty sleeping
- feeling overwhelmed
- constantly worrying
- Being irritable and short-tempered
- drinking or smoking more

Stress typically goes away when the stressor disappears. However, chronic stress can escalate into anxiety and/or depression.
​
When a sad mood lasts for a long time and interferes with normal, everyday functioning, you may be depressed. Symptoms of depression include:
- Continuous low mood or sadness
- Feeling hopeless and helpless
- Low self-esteem
- Feeling tearful
- Irritability and intolerance
- Lack of motivation
- Finding it difficult to make decisions
- Anxiety
- Difficulty sleeping
- Suicidal ideation
- Thoughts of self-harm

Anxiety disorders can include General Anxiety Disorder, Agoraphobia, Panic Disorder, Phobias, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and social anxiety disorder.
Common anxiety signs and symptoms include:
- Feeling nervous, restless or tense
- Increased heart rate
- Hyperventilation
- Trembling
- Sweating
- Trouble concentrating
- Avoiding things that trigger anxiety
